Isn't belief in God absurd?

If you've been through the website starting with answering the question on the home page then you should have realised that denying God leads to absurdity in ones worldview. You should also have realised that you can't trust your own reasoning. So when you find something in the Word of God that seems absurd to you, it's not the Bible that is absurd, but your faulty and fallible human reasoning that is absurd. Belief in God is not a blind faith. Belief in God is the foundation for all reasoning. Absurdity is a kind of foolishness due to believing falsehoods, and for something to be false presupposes right and truth. How do you get truth without God? You don't get truth without God, you j
ust get "brain fizz."

Aren't you talking a load of nonsense?

I base what I've said in this website on the Bible. To call something nonsense presupposes an ultimate standard of sense to compare it with. You can't know that something is crooked unless you know with certainty what straight is. So to call the Bible and God nonsense presupposes truth, and you can't get truth without God. So your question is nonsense and exposes the fact that you do actually know that God exists.

I really don’t believe God exists. How can you say that I do know God exists?

You really do know that God exists. I know that this is true the same way you do – by revelation from God. God has revealed his existence to all people through Creation and innately, but some people choose to “suppress the truth in unrighteousness” because they prefer their sin and living independently from God. (Romans 1). So no matter how much you protest that you don’t know God, I know that you do know God, but you may have gotten so good at suppressing the truth and trying to explain God away that you’ve almost forgotten that you’re doing it and have become self-deceived. Like an ostrich with its head in the sand you can’t see God because you don’t want to see Him. You’re choosing to focus on your doubts and ignore God’s existence, which leads to the absurd situation of not being able to know anything. (Go through my website carefully if you don’t yet realise that). It's absurd to even think that there is no God - the Bible says "The fool says in his heart, "There is no God."" (Psalm 14:1). This is not an intellectual foolishness but a moral foolishness where people deny what they actually know in their hearts.

The following scientific test (involving a lie detector) confirms that everyone does know that God exists.
Atheists Become Emotionally Aroused When Daring God to Do Terrible Things.

And scientific research with children has also confirmed that everyone knows that God exists even when religious teaching is withheld from them: Children see the World as 'Designed'!

Here is another scientific study that came to the same conclusion: Humans 'predisposed' to believe in gods.

Aren't you being arrogant to assert that God is true and that if I deny Him my worldview will become absurd?

I agree that arrogance is morally wrong, but what is your absolute standard for morality? Often when people have the truth and know it then it gets mistaken for arrogance. If people were trying to deny that 2 and 2 is 4 would it be arrogant to boldly proclaim that they are being absurd, and that you know for certain that 2 and 2 is 4?

Aren't you judging us? Doesn't the Bible say that it is wrong to judge?

It is true that the Bible says, "Judge not" (Mt 7:1) - but when you look at the context it is clear that Jesus was talking about not making a hypocritical judgment (judging others when you are doing the same thing). But is it wrong to judge? Is what I am doing at godorabsurdity.com wrong?
Yes, I believe that what you are doing at godorabsurdity.com is judging and it is wrong.

It's offensive that you're saying my worldview is absurd if I deny God. Wasn't Jesus kind to everyone?

"Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?" (Galatians 4:16). By nature the truth will often be offensive to those who are believing lies and don't want to embrace the truth. Jesus was loving and kind, but he also boldly proclaimed the truth and many people took offense at what he said. (E.g Matthew 15:1-20). It's always easier to take offense than to take correction. My purpose is not to offend you for the sake of being offensive. My purpose is that you would repent and receive Jesus Christ.

What about other gods? What makes what you are saying any different from the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM)?

There are no other gods. Psalm 96:5 “For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.”
As for the FSM - that's the kind of nonsense it takes to deny the one true God. I'm not talking about some private revelation. If I wanted to hear about someones private revelation of 'god' I'd go to the local mental asylum and talk with some of the patients there. The revelation I'm talking about is open for everyone to check out and everyone knows God innately anywhere. God alone is the necessary precondition for knowledge, and without him you can't justify any knowledge - let alone mocking jokes about the FSM.
God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7). It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31).

What about Eric the God-eating Magic Penguin?

Eric the God-eating Magic Penguin is an absurd parody made up by misotheists (God-haters) (Romans 1:30) who are trying to mock God by saying God can’t exist because Eric ate him.

Eric the God-eating Magic Penguin doesn’t exist because in order to be able to destroy God he’d have to be an all-powerful god, and the Bible says in Psalm 96:5 “For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.”

There is only one God – the God of the Bible. How do I know this? By revelation from God who has revealed His existence to all of us. (See Proof God Exists). So the “proof” of God’s supposed non-existence doesn’t logically follow.

The reality is that everyone knows that God exists – but in order to suppress the truth they try and make up silly nonsense like Eric the Penguin. For more info see my blog post 'What about other gods?'

What about UFOs and aliens? Can't they give me revelation knowledge?

I think you've been watching too many sci-fi movies! The short answer is that aliens can't be relied on as a source of revelation knowledge because they aren't gods or god-like creatures - they are a demonic deception.

For more on this topic see my blog post about UFOs and Aliens.

Hasn't evolution, the Big Bang theory, and science disproved the Bible?

Not at all. For a better understanding of the limitations of science see my blog post on why Science is Always False. If God had used evolution then he would have told us in the Bible. (By evolution I'm referring to microbes to man evolution, and not merely adaptation or speciation.) For more on this important question please refer to the main page on Evolution.

Why did you make the website?

I made this website because I know and love God and out of gratitude to God I want to share the truth with others. I know with certainty that the Bible is true, and that those who deny God are in big trouble. Heaven and Hell are real, and Jesus said unless people repent they will perish. (Luke 13:3). Mentioning hell isn't popular these days (although I believe part of the problem with that is related to misconceptions on this topic - see my blog post on hell here), but mentioning hell is not a threat, it's a warning. If a person is heading for a cliff, the most loving thing for people to do is to warn that person. People don't go to hell for denying the God they don't know, but for denying the God they do know. (See Romans 1 which says everyone knows God but those who claim to not know God are suppressing the truth about him and as a result although they claim to be wise they are actually fools.)

Aren't you just in it for the money?

No, not at all. But if God were not true then what would be wrong with deceiving and stealing from people? If all we are is nothing more than stardust (scientists have found that much of our bodies chemicals have a lot in common with the chemical composition of exploded stars), then why are you concerned about what one bunch of stardust does to another bunch of stardust? The fact that you are concerned about it is because you DO know God. He has given us an innate sense of morality and an innate realisation that humans have dignity and value because we are all made in His image. The ironic thing with you accusing Christians of 'stealing' is that you yourself are stealing from God in order to have a basis for making moral claims. (Dr Greg Bahnsen called it "living on borrowed capital" - see my blog). Morality makes sense with God, but morality makes no sense if we are all just stardust.

What is sin?

Sin is doing (and thinking) wrong things. We know when we are doing wrong because God has given a conscience. However our consciences are not totally reliable because of the corruption of sin. Sin is breaking God's Law, so a good way to know what sin is, is to look at the 10 commandments (found in Exodus 20).
The 9th commandment is 'You shall not lie'. Lying isn't wrong because it hurts other people, but because God isn't a liar.
The 8th commandment is 'You shall not steal'. Stealing isn't wrong because it hurts other people, but because God is not a thief.
The 7th commandment is 'You shall not commit adultery.' Adultery (and lust, which Jesus called adultery of the heart) isn't wrong because it hurts other people, but because God is totally faithful.

You might think you are a good person. I encourage you to take the Good Person Test to find out more about what that means.

Sin is characterized by living independently from God, and sin is serious because of who the sin is against. If a person punches a friend the friend might be upset. If a person punches a policeman they could go to jail. But if a person punches  the Prime Minister or President of a country they could be shot, executed, or face life in prison. Sin is serious and warrants Hell because of the greatness of God. There is no one greater than Almighty God.

How can I know God?

You already do know God exists, but if you have not repented then you don't know him in a saving way. In order to know God and escape absurdity and Hell, you need to repent and trust in Jesus Christ who paid the penalty for your sins by dying on the cross almost 2000 years ago. But this good news will not make sense until you understand the bad news. (Please take the Good Person Test if you have not yet done so).

Repentance comes from the Greek word metanoia and means to 'change your mind'. In order to repent you need to change your mind about God and sin - and this in turn will result in turning away from wrong-doing. To repent is to turn away from wrong-doing and to turn to God. But this is not something you do by yourself. Repentance is a gift of God. (2 Timothy 2:25 "Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth").
You need to beg God for repentance, and keep doing that until you know you've encountered God and received salvation. God will give you eternal life starting with redeemed reasoning in the here and now. Read the Bible every day, pray, and find a Bible believing church. If you'd like to contact me then I'd love to hear from you. (See contact form)

Isn't God selfish?

Not at all. I've heard this before from people who don't want to submit their lives to God. The Bible teaches that God created us for relationship with himself and our purpose in life is to know God, love Him, and glorify Him forever. God is totally worthy of our worship because He made us and there is no one greater than Him.  Love by it's very nature wants to give and share, and so God wanted to share that love (that has eternally existed within the Trinity) with others. Would you say to your parent's that you don't want to love them because they were selfish in having you? I hope not. But people are fallen human beings and far from perfect, whereas God is totally perfect. The other thing is that in calling God selfish or evil you are making a moral claim. But without God morality just becomes personal preference - which is the real issue - you prefer not to love God because you prefer your sin. You are actually stealing from God's morality in order to make the claim that God is immoral.

Isn't God evil?

This is another absurd claim I've heard from some professed atheists. Calling God evil is a moral claim, and you can't get an absolute standard of morality without God. So it's absurd to call God evil just because you can't understand some things in the Bible. Yes, the God of the Bible did kill some people for their sin. But this was for the greater good of humanity.

When I was at Bible College a few years ago one of the students was going off the rails drinking alcohol on campus and verbally abusing me and other students. I spoke with one of the professors who knew this student and the situation, and he told me the dilemma the college faced. If they showed mercy to him it would not be merciful for the rest of the students who were being abused by him. To show soft love to him would not be loving for everyone else.

At that moment I realised that God faces the same kind of dilemma with human beings. Sometimes the most loving thing God can do for humanity as a whole is to bring judgment. And in some cases people's evil was so bad that it meant killing those people in order to stop the world descending into a chaos and darkness that would have made Germany's 3rd Reich look good in comparison.

How could a loving God send people to hell?

What is hell? I believe that most people have a wrong understanding about hell, and I've written about that in a blog post here. I don't believe that the Bible teaches that hell is an eternal torture chamber for those who reject God. Hell, in terms of the Lake of Fire, is referring to the second death, which is the death of the soul. This death is the destruction of unbelievers after the final Day of Judgement where the soul will be irreversibly destroyed and so cease to exist. Jesus used very strong metaphors to describe hell in order to warn people of the folly of rejecting God and ending up losing everything.

The other thing is that God doesn't send people to hell. People choose to go there themselves because they hate God and love sin. CS Lewis said that the gates of hell are locked from the inside, meaning that those in hell are there because they chose to go there, and potentially at least could leave if they desired to. The problem is that in hell people won't want to leave as they will have become so intertwined with living in anti-reality that lies have become their reality. (See M Scott Peck - People of the Lie).

Even on Earth we can see the need for a containment of evil through prisons, so what makes you think that everyone should go to heaven? The best thing about heaven is being with God, and if you hate God in this life and spend your whole life avoiding him, what makes you think you'd enjoy being in heaven in the next life?

Isn't God deceptive?

No, not at all. If God could deceive us it would mean He is a liar, and God is not a liar. (Hebrews 6:18; Numbers 23:19; Titus 1:2). It is impossible for God - by His very nature this is impossible - it's like trying to separate wetness and water - it just can't be done.

There are a number of passages in the Bible that some skeptics love to take out of context to try to assert that God does deceive people. However when understood and interpreted properly (in the light of the very clear verses above) it can be shown that God hasn't deceived or lied to anyone, but has merely abandoned people to their own rebellious and deceptive hearts - hearts that want to believe lies from people and evil spirits - hearts that won't listen to God even when being warned and given full knowledge from God that lying spirits are going to try to lie to them - hearts that have already chosen lies and hardened their hearts against God.

The short answer though is that I know that God cannot lie or deceive us by revelation from God. If God could lie you couldn't even make sense of your question. The proof that the Bible is true (and that God cannot lie) is that if it weren't true nothing could be true. How do you get truth without God?

How do you know YOUR reasoning is valid? Couldn't you be wrong too about everything you are claiming about God?

The only way to escape the vicious circle of reasoning that your reasoning is valid is to have revelation knowledge from the God who knows everything. This revelation transcends everything and breaks through the circle. I know that my reasoning is valid by revelation from God who has revealed some things to us such that we can know them for certain (such as His existence and the truth of the Bible). So no, I could not be wrong about the existence of God and the truth of the Bible. It's impossible for me to be wrong about those things - I know that by revelation from God, and by the fact that God is the necessary precondition for knowing anything. If God did not exist then you could not know anything - which is absurd. You'd have no way of knowing that your mind was reliable, but because God does exist and created us in His image we can know that our minds are generally reliable and that we aren't all living in an absurd illusory world. What I'm saying about God is not dependent upon my reasoning but transcends that by revelation from God. As I mentioned above - it's not my private revelation but is open for everyone to see through God's Word. Everyone knows that God exists through Creation and innately, including you - even if you happen to be a professing atheist.

How do you know YOU aren't in the Matrix? (Or a Brain in a Vat)

I know that I'm not in the Matrix (or just a brain in a vat being fed a computer simulated world) by revelation from the God who cannot lie. If God could deceive us and make us think that we are actually in the real world, when really we aren't, then God would be a liar. It is impossible for God to lie. (Hebrews 6:18). To suggest that we could be in the Matrix is absurd, but without God that is exactly the kind of absurd possibility that you are left with.

Isn't Christianity a dying religion?

While it is true that in Western nations traditional Christianity does appear to be in decline, true biblical Christianity is growing, especially in the non-West. So the claim that Christianity will disappear soon is just absurd nonsense.

"
The French philosopher Voltaire, a skeptic who destroyed the faith of many people, boasted that within 100 years of his death, the Bible would disappear from the face of the earth. Voltaire died in 1728, but the Bible lives on. The irony of history is that 50 years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society moved into his former house and used his printing presses to print thousands of Bibles." (From the Evidence Bible here).

How can you say that the Bible is true when it's full of contradictions?

There are no contradictions in the Bible - only apparent ones that can easily be reconciled with a bit of study. If you have any particular contradiction in mind we could look at it and I could reconcile it for you, but before we do that you must first explain to me how you account for the law of non-contradiction. This is an absolute law of logic which makes sense in the biblical worldview, but makes no sense without God. If there were no God then why would contradictions always be wrong? I'd also like to ask you how you reconcile the contradictions in your own worldview, where you live as if God exists (by assuming the uniformity of nature and the reliability of your senses and reasoning) but try to deny God with what you say? Without God we are just evolved pond scum and bunches of stardust, which contradicts the way people act as if we have human dignity and are much more than just animals or stardust. How do you reconcile these contradictions in your worldview? It's not the Bible that is full of contradictions, but your life!

Isn't the Bible an outdated bronze-age book?

Isn't 2 and 2 being 4 an outdated idea? It's been around a lot longer than the Bible has. The logical fallacy here is that just because something is old it must be false. CS Lewis called it "Chronological snobbery."

Your argument has been refuted by people online. What do you think about that?

You mean 'refutations' like this person tried to make here? The thing is that this argument is irrefutable, and in order to try to refute it you have to assume the truth of the biblical worldview where things like reason, logic, and truth can be made sense of. It is not possible to escape the viciously circular problem of using your reasoning to validate your reasoning - apart from having revelation from God who enables us to know things with certainty.
