Shintoism
Shintoism does not provide a basis for certain knowledge. In the Shinto religion there are many gods, but none of them have revealed themselves to us in a way that we can have certainty about anything. There is no divine book or other infallible revelation. Also the gods are not generally considered to be personal but are considered to be impersonal forces. And if there are many gods how can we even know which one to listen to?
Paul's words to the polytheistic Athenians about 2000 years ago apply just the same to most Japanese today -
Acts 17:22-23 "Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you."
If the Japanese Shinto gods were really real then wouldn't they reveal themselves in a clear way so that we could know for sure that they existed? And if they were real and actually cared about you then wouldn't they reveal their love to you in a way that you could know that for sure? Either the Japanese Shinto gods do not exist, or they are not all-powerful, or they don't care.
In contrast the God of the Bible is real, is all-powerful, is loving towards the people He created, and He has given us certain revelation of His existence innately, through Creation, and through the Bible. Because of the certain revelation Christian's have that the God of the Bible is the one true God, we can know that the Shinto gods are not true.
Psalm 96:5 “For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.”
The Shinto gods are not true, because they do not exist. They are idols made up by people. If you believe in Shinto, I encourage you to come back to the one true Creator God. Although you have a belief in many gods, in your heart of hearts you know that the one true Creator God exists.
